It was ten years ago today that I wrote my “Rules for Living”. They have never been published in any form other than the spiral bound notebook I wrote them down in. Now, for the first time, I am showing them to the world. Enjoy.

KEVIN’S RULES FOR LIVING

  1. Never take life too seriously.
  2. If you can’t finish it, don’t start it.
  3. Always stand up for what is right and honorable, no matter the cost.
  4. Marriage is a burden to be avoided.
  5. Do not have children, they only bring stress and lead to an early demise.
  6. Always give thanks for what you have.
  7. Never complain about what you don’t have.
  8. Always be generous to others, especially the less fortunate.
  9. Always tell the people you love, “I love you.”
  10. Never lie about anything, no matter how small.
  11. One can never play too much, play is vital to keeping the flame of youth alive.
  12. Never do anything when driving a vehicle – focus on the driving alone.
  13. Never drive behind a car in which the driver’s head is not clearly visible.
  14. Shut up and listen to what I say, do what I tell you to do and the world will be a better place.
  15. Music is a part of living. If your life lacks music, then you lack life.
  16. We live but once, enjoy each day to the fullest, free of worry, free of anxiety. See rule No. 1.
  17. Always reward yourself with nice things every so often.
  18. Never speak badly about someone unless there is just cause.
  19. Honor and respect your parents, tell them how much you appreciate them, everyday.
  20. If you are given a gift or favor, always give thanks to the person who gave it to you.
  21. If you burp or break wind, always excuse yourself. If at all possible, avoid such things in social settings.
  22. Never hold in your sad, angry or any negative feelings. Find a friend and talk about it.
  23. Greet each new day with a smile and close each day with thanks and hope for another.
  24. Always show consideration for other people no matter their race, religion or beliefs.
  25. Be color blind to other races. For we are all equal, we are all human kind.
  26. Love your fellow human beings.
  27. Don’t worry about money, it never brings true happiness.
  28. Never worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
  29. Find your passion and follow it. Never do something you don’t have a passion for.
  30. When someone is speaking to you, give them your full attention – regardless of whether or not you find the topic of interest.
  31. Always give hugs, they are free and always appreciated.
  32. Giving far exceeds receiving.
  33. Always offer a helping hand for those in need.
  34. Always give the utmost care and devotion to your pets. They have feelings just as you.
  35. Always uphold the ten commandments.
  36. Always take time to laugh at yourself.
  37. If you are in love with someone, be faithful to them and them alone.
  38. Never lust after someone.
  39. If you don’t feel well or have had a bad day, never take it out on another person.
  40. Only hold grudges if they are justified and right.
  41. Sadness breeds hate, hate breeds misery and misery corrupts the soul.
  42. Never carry hate in your heart, if it remains for too long, you will never know anything else.
  43. Always eat the food you love. Life is too short for diets and restrictions.
  44. No rules is unbreakable, that is called being human. However, always be prepared for the resulting consequences.
  45. Always be set in your ways, otherwise you will be set in the ways of others.
  46. Always be yourself in every situation.
  47. Never do drugs which are illegal, you are only damaging yourself in the long run.
  48. Don’t smoke or chew tobacco.
  49. Drink alcohol in moderation, most especially in social situations.
  50. Always be learning new things.
  51. Always try something you’ve never done before.
  52. Never say never unless there is a reason.
  53. There is no such word as “can’t”.
  54. Speak softly and carry a big stick.
  55. Always exercise your imagination.
  56. Never forget what it’s like to be a child.
  57. Never forget those you have loved who have died.
  58. Never grow up!
  59. Do something fun everyday.
  60. Being grumpy because you’re sleepy is okay.
  61. Never sleep with the windows closed on a rainy night.
  62. Whoever has the most toys…wins.
  63. Gummi Bears are the official candy of Heaven.
  64. Duty, Honor, Country – these are the values of life.
  65. One can never assume too few sexual positions, or in some cases too many.
  66. Retirement is a death sentence.
  67. Stop to admire the wonders of this world at least once a day.
  68. A tiger can change his stripes by not being a tiger. Anyone can change, if they have the desire.
  69. Pick up a pencil and draw something, anything. In no time you will be an artist.
  70. Drink a cup of tea every day. Two cups when you are stressed and three cups when you are ill.
  71. Sleep no less than six hours and no more than ten.
  72. A hero resides within each of us, waiting to be revealed.
  73. Never eat cold pizza.
  74. Never allow anyone to push you around or take advantage of you.
  75. If you spend money on a service, don’t let the job go undone or half-ass.
  76. The best furniture is IKEA furniture.
  77. If it’s not made by Apple, it’s probably no good.
  78. Cooking your own food, with fresh ingredients, is the most important thing you can do.
  79. If your chair squeaks, perhaps it’s time to get a new chair.
  80. There is no wrong when there is right.
  81. Learn to play the piano, it can set you free.
  82. Water is far better than soda.
  83. Be respectful of the elderly, treat them with love and compassion.
  84. When someone dies, another is born to take their place.
  85. Never procrastinate unless there is a reason to do so.
  86. Take a shower everyday. Take a bath once a month or everyday if you are ill.
  87. Never take children shopping for adult products. It only serves to cause problems and lots of noise.
  88. Believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything.
  89. Never worry about what others may think of you, do they truly know you? No.
  90. Always defend your beliefs with firm conviction.
  91. Speak when spoken to, speak even if you aren’t.
  92. Prayer is the most powerful ability you have, use it in good times as well as bad.
  93. Always respect nature and it’s creatures.
  94. Music is a window into the mental state of the composer.
  95. Having sex outside of marriage is an abomination.
  96. Never pick your nose, clean your ears or anything along those lines while in social situations or otherwise.
  97. Eat your food slowly, enjoy the taste and texture of it. You’re not an animal.
  98. When yawning, always cover your mouth and excuse yourself.
  99. Life is too short not to do what you love 100% of the time.
  100. Rainbows are visions, but only illusions and rainbows have nothing to hide.
