Workin’ for IKEA and LOVING IT!

On March 9th I began attending training classes in preparation for my new job at IKEA. God of all the places I’d be working, IKEA was not one of them. But I have come to learn that IKEA is an incredibly awesome place to work. I am a part-time coworker (that’s what they call their employees) and yet I have the same benefits as a full-time coworker. The work environment is awesome, it’s very positive, upbeat, everyone smiles and says hello, everyone knows your name and everyone is there to help if you need it. I am a sales associate working in Work IKEA, the place that sells office furnishings. My first day “on the floor” was Friday and it was only for about 4 hours. Yesterday was my real trial by fire. Saturdays are our busiest day of the week, with over 12,000 customers coming through the doors. Turns out we had about 18,600 yesterday…which is called a “Red Day.” Despite the incredible number of people in the department, I had a great time answering questions and helping people pick out desk systems that work best for their needs and budget. I tell ya, I was having a ball! Who would have guessed I would be enjoying this kind of job so much, but I am. It’s just a blast. My coworker Caroline had to drag me off the floor and force me to take my breaks, I didn’t wanna leave! Breaks are mandatory at IKEA. If you have a 15 or 30 min break on your schedule (on long days you’ll have two 15s and a 30), you have to take them. No ifs, ands or buts. So I went down to the IKEA coworker cafeteria, grabbed a tray and had the employee lunch, which consisted yesterday of Spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, a salad and a soft drink for $3. And even better you get unlimited refills on the soft drinks. Did I say IKEA rocks? OMG! I am loving this job. My feet are having a hard time of it, only because I am not used to standing for 4-8 hours, but I am going to get some nice shoe inserts and one coworker told me to just keep walking and not stand still.

Anyway, here’s a photo of me in my IKEA garb showing off my little name tag. There is also a button attached to the lanyard which reads “ROOKIE”, that’s for us new people so customers don’t tear us apart too badly. LOL!
